DMsGuild or Patreon?
I had someone ask me this once on Twitter: should I buy from you on DMsGuild or Patreon?
While this website does link to DMsGuild for your convenience to buy single maps, the answer is hands down always and every time, Patreon.
First, lets look at the fees. DMsGuild takes a downright criminal 50% cut for the privilege of listing my map on their site. So I spend 8+ hours working on a map, charge $3 and they take $1.50 of it.
Patreon takes 2.9% + $0.30 so on that same $3 they would take $0.39, and on a larger package, say $6 they only take $0.48. So yeah, if you want the artist you’re supporting to have a shot at a living wage, Patreon is significantly better.
And how about what you get?
Well for your $3 on DMsGuild, you get one map pack and its Fantasy Grounds files.
But for €3 on Patreon you get access to *all* the maps I have ever released. So if you want more than one map, of course Patreon is a better deal.
My Fantasy Grounds files are on a higher tier, yes, I charge €10. But this also includes access to the large archive of .mod files I have made so if you want more than one of the maps for Fantasy Grounds, its still your best bet.
AND, DMsGuild forbids me from listing Foundry VTT files on their site, but these are also included in the Big Damn Hero Patreon tier. So if you’re a FVTT user, there really is just one choice.
So yes, both for you getting the most maps, and me getting paid for my work, Patreon is absolutely far and away better than DMsGuild.
